UK trip from the EU: why roaming is no longer automatic and what it can cost

EU roam-like-at-home rules stopped covering the UK in 2021. How to check what your EU plan charges in the UK, and when a travel eSIM costs less.

Short answer

Since 1 January 2021 the EU's roam-like-at-home rules no longer apply to the United Kingdom, so an EU mobile plan may charge for use in the UK. Some EU carriers still include the UK, some sell a pass and some charge per use. Check your plan's UK rate, multiply by billed days and compare it with a travel eSIM's total.

Key facts

  • The EU roaming regulation covers EU and EEA countries; the UK left it on 1 January 2021.
  • Whether your EU plan includes the UK is now a commercial choice of your carrier.
  • UK carriers' customers visiting the EU face the same question in reverse.
  • A travel eSIM for the UK is data-only; your home number stays on your home SIM.

What changed for EU visitors to the UK?

Inside the EU and EEA, the roaming regulation lets customers of EU operators use their plan in other member countries at no extra charge, within fair-use limits. That is the rule known as roam like at home. The United Kingdom left the EU, and since 1 January 2021 the regulation no longer covers it. For an EU traveller, that means use in the UK is now treated like any other non-EU country unless your carrier chooses to include it.

Many carriers did keep the UK in their plans, at least for a while. Others introduced a daily charge or a UK pass. Because it is now a commercial decision, it can change when your plan changes. The only safe way to know the cost of your next UK trip is to look it up.

How do you check what your plan charges in the UK?

  1. Open your carrier's roaming page or app and search for "United Kingdom" rather than "Europe". Zone names such as "Europe" may or may not include the UK.
  2. Note the type of charge. Included, a day pass, a week pass, or pay per use.
  3. Note the limit. An included allowance can be smaller than your home allowance; above it, a surcharge or reduced speed can apply.
  4. Check calls and texts separately. Calls to UK numbers and calls home can be priced differently.

Write the result down with the date you checked it. If you travel to the UK often, do it again before each trip.

How do you price a UK trip as a whole?

Use the same three lines for each option: the main charge, extra data if you run out, and the calls or texts you will still need. Here is a five-day London trip for one person with example numbers. They are not any carrier's price.

EU plan with a UK day charge, 5 daysExample numbers
  • UK daily charge, 6 billed days at $6 (example)$36.00
  • Calls to UK numbers, 10 min at $0.40 (example)$4.00
  • Total roaming$40.00
Six billed days for five nights because of the flight days. Example numbers only.
Travel eSIM for data, home SIM for callsExample numbers
  • UK eSIM plan for 7 days (example)$9.00
  • Calls to UK numbers on the home line, 10 min at $0.40 (example)$4.00
  • Total with eSIM$13.00
The eSIM is data-only, so the call line stays on your home SIM. Example numbers only.

On these example numbers the eSIM route costs about a third of the daily charge. If your plan still includes the UK at no extra cost, the first ledger falls to the call line alone and roaming wins. That is why the check in the previous section comes first.

TripoSIM's public price index listed United Kingdom with 21 plans: 1 GB from $1.14, 5 GB from $4.28, 10 GB from $7.66, and unlimited-data plans from $2.38. These are the cheapest plans of each size in TripoSIM's own catalogue that day; check each plan's days before comparing. Prices change, and the live United Kingdom page is authoritative.

What about fair use when the UK is included?

Where a carrier includes the UK, it may apply its own allowance or fair-use policy, which can be lower than your home data. If you stream or work online, compare that allowance with your likely use for the trip. A traveller who would exceed the included amount pays the surcharge on top, and a small prepaid plan for the extra data can be cheaper. Our plan terms glossary explains fair use, full-speed data and throttling in plain words.

What if you are a UK traveller going to the EU?

The same logic applies in reverse. UK carriers are not bound by the EU regulation, and their EU roaming terms are a commercial choice: included, a daily charge or a pass. Check your plan, count billed days and compare with a prepaid alternative. For trips through several EU countries, compare a regional plan that lists every country with your carrier's daily charge. How do you stop the UK days being billed by accident?

A daily charge is usually triggered by any use of mobile data on the home line, even a background sync. If you decide to use an eSIM, make sure the home line cannot roam:

  • Turn Data Roaming off for the home line.
  • Turn off automatic data switching between lines (on iPhone, "Allow Mobile Data Switching").
  • Keep the home line on for calls and texts if you want to stay reachable.

Frequently asked questions

Does roam like at home work in the UK?

Not by law any more. The EU roaming regulation applies to the EU and EEA, and the UK stopped being covered on 1 January 2021. Some EU carriers still include the UK in their plans voluntarily; check your own plan's country list.

Can my carrier start charging for the UK without telling me?

Carriers usually announce changes to their tariffs, but you should not rely on remembering a notice. Check the UK rate on your carrier's roaming page or app shortly before each trip.

Is a UK travel eSIM worth it for a weekend in London?

If your plan includes the UK, no. If it charges a day pass, a weekend is two or three billed days and a small eSIM may still cost less. Compare the two totals; see our guide to two- and three-day trips.

Does the same apply to Switzerland?

Switzerland is not in the EU or EEA, so EU roaming rules do not cover it either. Many EU plans include it, others do not. Check it separately on your carrier's list.
